Questions & Answers

Ride & Run Lab — your questions, answered

Ride & Run Lab is a cycling and running app by SureHarbor. It records your rides, runs, walks and workouts and turns them into the numbers that make you faster — power, heart rate and pace, training load, Form & Fitness, segments and KOMs, structured training, an AI coach and the retroRIDE indoor trainer. It's free to record and review, with the full analysis suite on Pro for $5 a month — a cheaper alternative to a Strava, Zwift or TrainingPeaks subscription. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, the web and Apple Watch.

Getting started

What is Ride & Run Lab?

Ride & Run Lab is a cycling and running app that records your rides, runs, walks and workouts and turns them into the numbers that actually make you faster — power, heart-rate and pace analysis, training load, Form & Fitness, segments and KOMs, structured training, an AI coach and an indoor-trainer game called retroRIDE. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, the web and Apple Watch, and it's made by SureHarbor.

Who is Ride & Run Lab for?

It's built for everyday cyclists, runners, walkers and triathletes who want pro-level training analysis without a pro-level price tag — from someone recording their first rides to riders chasing segment KOMs, doing structured power workouts, or training for an event. If you've used Strava, Garmin Connect, TrainingPeaks or Zwift and wished one app did the lot for a few dollars a month, that's the gap it fills.

How do I get Ride & Run Lab?

You can download it free from the Apple App Store (iPhone and iPad) at https://apps.apple.com/app/ride-run-lab/id6791620041 and from Google Play (Android) at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.sureharbor.ride. You can also use it straight away in any browser at https://ride.sureharbor.app and install it to your home screen as an app. There's an Apple Watch app too, and the retroRIDE indoor trainer even runs on Apple TV.

Do I need any special hardware to use it?

No. You can record a ride, run or walk with just your phone's GPS. If you want more, the app pairs over Bluetooth with heart-rate straps, power meters and speed/cadence sensors so your phone works as a full bike computer, and it connects to smart trainers for indoor sessions. None of that is required to get started.

Pricing & plans

How much does Ride & Run Lab cost?

Recording and reviewing your rides, runs and workouts is free. The full analysis suite — power curve, training load, Form & Fitness, deeper segment and fitness insights and the rest — is on Ride & Run Lab Pro for just $5 a month. There's no big up-front cost and you can start free.

Is there a free version of Ride & Run Lab?

Yes. You can record unlimited rides, runs and walks, see your routes and maps, and review your activities without paying anything. Pro ($5/month) unlocks the full analysis layer on top. Unlike some apps, the basics of seeing and reviewing your own activities aren't locked behind the paywall.

What do I get with Ride & Run Lab Pro?

Pro unlocks the full training-science suite: your power curve and best efforts, Normalized Power, Intensity Factor and training load (TSS), Form, Fitness & Fatigue trends, FTP and VO₂max tracking, deeper segment analysis and the AI coach. It's $5 a month — a fraction of what comparable analysis costs on other platforms.

Are there ads in Ride & Run Lab?

No. The app is funded by the optional $5/month Pro subscription, not by advertising, so your training feed isn't full of ads.

How it compares to other apps

What's a cheaper alternative to Strava Premium?

Ride & Run Lab is a strong, cheaper alternative to a Strava subscription. Strava's subscription currently runs around US$11.99 a month (about US$79.99 a year); Ride & Run Lab Pro is $5 a month and still gives you segments and KOMs, a social feed with friends, kudos and comments, plus deeper training analysis — power curve, training load, and Form & Fitness — that Strava charges extra for or doesn't do. You can also record and review for free, and import your existing Strava history.

Is there an affordable alternative to Zwift for indoor training?

Yes. Zwift is a premium indoor-cycling subscription at around US$19.99 a month (about US$199.99 a year, and roughly AU$299 a year). Ride & Run Lab includes retroRIDE — structured ERG workouts, FTP and MAP tests, a velodrome racing mode and real-road course racing against live riders and pace bots — and the whole app, indoor and outdoor, is $5 a month on Pro. If you want structured trainer sessions and some racing without the big subscription, it's a genuine budget alternative.

How does Ride & Run Lab compare to TrainingPeaks?

TrainingPeaks is a premium analysis-and-coaching platform that typically costs several times more than Ride & Run Lab. Ride & Run Lab covers the metrics most athletes actually use — training load (TSS), Form, Fitness & Fatigue, FTP and VO₂max, power zones and structured workouts — for $5 a month, and bundles in recording, maps, segments, an indoor trainer and an AI coach in the same app. For most riders and runners who want structured training without paying a premium, it's a far cheaper option.

Can I switch from Strava, Garmin or Zwift without losing my data?

Yes. Ride & Run Lab imports your existing activity files — FIT, GPX and TCX, including the zipped exports Strava, Garmin and Zwift produce — so you can bring your ride and run history across. It also links directly to Garmin and Wahoo accounts so new rides import automatically, and syncs Apple Watch and Apple Health workouts. You don't have to start from scratch.

Do I have to pay just to see my own basic stats?

No. Recording your activities and seeing your routes, maps and basic review is free in Ride & Run Lab. The $5/month Pro plan adds the advanced training analysis, but the everyday job of logging and looking back at your rides and runs isn't paywalled.

Cycling & training analysis

Does Ride & Run Lab calculate cycling power metrics?

Yes. From every ride it works out your power curve and best efforts, Normalized Power, Intensity Factor and training load (TSS), plus average and peak power across key durations. If you ride with a power meter or smart trainer those numbers are measured directly; the app also estimates power where it can.

Does it track Form, Fitness and Fatigue?

Yes. Ride & Run Lab builds your Fitness, Fatigue and Form (the same idea as CTL, ATL and training-stress balance) from your training load over time, so you can see when you're building, when you're tired and when you're fresh enough to push or race.

Does Ride & Run Lab have segments and KOMs?

Yes. It matches your rides against local segments and bunch-ride sprints and shows exactly where you rank, so you can chase KOMs and personal bests. Segments are part of the app, not a paid add-on service.

Can I do a structured power workout or an FTP test?

Yes. Through retroRIDE you can run structured ERG workouts in power zones on a smart trainer, and take an FTP test or a MAP (maximal aerobic power) test. The app updates your FTP, zones and training load from the results, and even flags when your recent riding suggests your FTP has gone up.

Does it estimate my VO₂max?

Yes. The MAP (maximal aerobic power) test ramps you to exhaustion on a smart trainer, reads your peak 1-minute power, and estimates your VO₂max and aerobic ceiling from it — a lab-style number without the lab.

Indoor training — retroRIDE

What is retroRIDE?

retroRIDE is Ride & Run Lab's indoor smart-trainer mode — a retro-styled training game. It has four parts: retroTRAIN for structured ERG workouts and FTP/MAP tests, a MAP test for your aerobic ceiling, 8-BitVELO for head-to-head velodrome racing, and retroRACE for racing real-road courses against live riders and pace bots. It runs on the phone and web app and on Apple TV.

Can I race other people indoors on Ride & Run Lab?

Yes. 8-BitVELO puts you on the velodrome boards for pursuits, flying 200s and bunch sprints, and retroRACE lets you race real-road courses against live riders and pace bots with KOMs, sprints and a crown on every climb — all controlled by your effort on a smart trainer.

Does retroRIDE work with my smart trainer?

Yes. retroRIDE connects to smart trainers to hold your target power in ERG mode for workouts and tests, and to drive the racing modes from your real effort. You pair your trainer and sensors over Bluetooth in the app.

Running, triathlon & strength

Does Ride & Run Lab work for runners?

Yes — it's Ride & Run Lab, not just ride. It records runs and walks with pace, distance, heart rate and route maps, and folds them into the same training-load and Form & Fitness picture as your rides, so your whole training is in one place.

Is Ride & Run Lab good for triathletes?

Yes. It handles all three disciplines — bike, swim and run — plus time trials, and keeps your combined training load and fitness in one view. That makes it a tidy, low-cost option for age-group triathletes who don't want three separate apps.

Does it track strength and gym workouts?

Yes. Gym Plans lets you build strength sessions on your phone or the web and run them on your Apple Watch, logging your sets and reps and feeding per-muscle recovery back into your training picture alongside your rides and runs.

Devices, sensors & syncing

What devices does Ride & Run Lab run on?

iPhone and iPad, Android, any modern web browser (and you can install it to your home screen), plus an Apple Watch app. The retroRIDE indoor trainer also runs on Apple TV for a big-screen session.

Does it sync with Apple Watch and Apple Health?

Yes. The Apple Watch app records workouts, and Ride & Run Lab automatically imports Apple Watch and Apple Health workouts into your history, so a ride or run recorded on your Watch shows up in the app on its own.

Does Ride & Run Lab connect to Garmin and Wahoo?

Yes. You can link your Garmin and Wahoo accounts so new rides import automatically, and you can import your older history from Strava, Garmin or Zwift as activity files (FIT, GPX or TCX, including their zipped exports).

Can I pair heart-rate, power and cadence sensors?

Yes. In the app you can pair Bluetooth heart-rate straps, power meters and speed/cadence sensors and use your phone as a bike computer, with the sensors streaming live while you record. (On iPhone, Bluetooth sensors need the installed app rather than the browser — that's an Apple limitation — but GPS recording works anywhere.)

Will my Zwift rides come across to Ride & Run Lab?

You can bring Zwift rides in as files, and if your Zwift ride lands in Wahoo, new Wahoo rides sync across automatically. Because some services only keep a ride's file for about a day, the most reliable way to capture older Zwift or indoor rides is to import the FIT file.

Coaching, community & marketplace

Does Ride & Run Lab have an AI coach?

Yes. Pro includes an AI coach that reads your training data and helps you plan and interpret your riding and running, and you can also connect with a real coach through the app if you want a human in the loop.

Can teams or scouts find riders on Ride & Run Lab?

Yes. There's a talent board where riders can publish a talent card with their numbers, and teams and scouts can discover and contact them — a way to put your performance in front of the people who pick riders.

Is there a marketplace for bikes and gear?

Yes. Ride & Run Lab has a built-in Bicycle Buy Swap Sell marketplace so you can buy, sell and swap bikes and gear with the riding community right inside the app.

Does Ride & Run Lab have a social feed with friends?

Yes. You can add friends, follow their activities, and give and get kudos and comments, with push notifications when friends finish an activity, comment or give you kudos — the social side of training without a separate app.

The company & your data

Who makes Ride & Run Lab?

Ride & Run Lab is built by SureHarbor, an Australian maker of specialised apps. It's one of the SureHarbor family of products, developed and supported directly by the team rather than a large faceless platform.

Is my training data private?

Your account is yours. You choose what you share with friends, you can block other users, and your activity data is used to compute your own metrics and coaching — the app is funded by the Pro subscription, not by selling your data. You stay in control of what's visible.

Is Ride & Run Lab available in my country?

Yes. It's on the Apple App Store and Google Play and works in any browser, so you can use it wherever you ride or run. It's made in Australia and used by riders and runners anywhere.
